Mach Three ‘collects’ Group double at AucklandStallion Station’s flagship sire Mach Three stole the show at the Auckland Cup meeting last Friday (March 12) when he produced two Group winners on the night. Unbeaten two-year-old Collectable made a one-act affair of the $94,600 Group 3 Delightful Lady Classic, making it three wins from as many attempts, then, an hour later, Russley Rascal strengthened his grip on the NZ 3YO of the Year title by trouncing his rivals in the $500,000 Group 1 Northern Derby. Given a perfect trip in the one-out one-back trail, Collectable was always travelling well within herself. Hooked three deep by Nicole Molander rounding the home turn, she took aim at the pacemaking Miss Elsie and exploded to the front to win by four lengths with something in reserve. Collectable hoisted a new lifetime mark of 1:58.2 for the 1700 metres mobile. Bred by Studholme Bloodstock, who also races her, Collectable is a Mach Three filly out of the unraced Stage Talent, a Soky’s Atom mare who has left five foals for five winners. She is also the dam of the prolific Moonee Valley winner Slippery Mackenzie 1:57.3 ($95,804), Hear The Cheers TT1:58.3, About Ambition 1:59.2 and The Actress. Stage Talent was a daughter of the Stampede mare Stage Queen (dam of 5 winners), whose dam, Dream Bel, was by Lumber Dream from Avon Bel, by Key Club from the Secure mare Secure Bell, and tracing to a noted foundation mare in Bonnie Belle, the ancestress of the 2006 Delightful Lady Classic winner Reality Check.
An impressive heat winner the previous week, Russley Rascal was a commanding favourite in the Northern Derby and won accordingly. After settling midfield in the running line, the brilliant gelding was switched three-wide in the middle stages by Blair Orange to improve his position. Working to the front with 1200 metres to go, Russley Rascal copped plenty of pressure from Victoria Derby winner Courage To Rule during the last lap. However, the gelding was more than to equal to the task, scooting clear by four lengths half-way down the running and being untroubled to hold that advantage at the wire. Devil Dodger (by Mach Three) finished third. Russley Rascal tramped the 2700 metres mobile trip in 3:20.5, the equivalent of a 1:59.5 mile rating. The last 800 was covered in a blazing 57.1 seconds. The $280,000 winner’s cheque boosted Russley Rascal’s stake earnings to $350,780, the result of seven wins and two placings from 10 starts. Bred by Tony Parker (of Auckland Reactor fame), Russley Rascal is a Mach Three gelding from the unraced Russley Fiction, by Road Machine from Russley Fancy 2:00.3, a very good mare by Soky’s Atom. Russley Fancy won seven races and $43,720 in stakes and, at the stud, left three winners including the speedy Russley Fame 1:52.4 (USA) and Russley Fire 2:00.2 (6 wins). Russley Rascal joins Fiery Falcon (2008) as Northern Derby winners sired by Mach Three. Stallion Station sires left six of the 13-strong Derby field with the others being the Courage Under Fire pair Courage To Rule and Secret Potion and the Mach Three duo Sir Lincoln and Hip Hop Anvil.

Group 1 to Courage fillyThe Courage Under Fire filly Secret Potion notched her most important win and sent her earnings past the $150,000 mark when she captured the $150,000 Group 1 Northern Oaks at Alexandra Park. Starting from outside the back row, the filly had only three behind her at the end of the first lap. Hooked three-wide by Nicole Molander with a mile to go, Secret Potion surged around the field and into the lead at the 1200 metre mark. She was never afterwards headed. Maintaining a solid tempo in front, Secret Potion was unchallenged in the home straight to win by three quarters of a length with the last 800 in 58.2 and 400 in 28.2. The mile rate for the 2700 metres mobile was 2:00 flat. New Zealand’s second highest stakes-winning filly this season, Secret Potion boasts the splendid record of 11 starts for six wins, two seconds and $152,062. Bred by Brian West, Secret Potion is a Courage Under Fire filly out of the unraced Putting On The Glitz, a Walton Hanover mare who left earlier winners in Yeah Baby 1:58.8 (USA) and Hesthe Village Dancer 2:02.1 (5 NSW wins). Awfully Nice, the grand-dam of Secret Potion, won two races and left six winners including Silver Lined Pocket 1:50.4 ($338,898), a winner in NZ, Australia and North America, Absolutely Fabulous TT1:55.6 and Pocket Of Gold 1:58.7 (15 wins). A Nero’s B B mare, Awfully Nice was a daughter of the Lumber Dream mare Dream Bel, the third dam of Collectable. Courage Under Fire, who is enjoying a banner year, especially with his three-year-olds, and is lying in second position on the Australian and NZ 3YO Sires’ premierships. Recent winners by him have been Lanercost 1:57.3 (5 wins from 6 starts this season), Bells And Whistles 1:56.7 (Tabcorp Park), Franco Turnaround 1:58.5 (Albion Park) and Im Maggie Jaccka 1:58.8 (Globe Derby).
We sponsor Pinjarra Super 9’sThe connections of new Pinjarra track record older Has The Answers benefitted to the tune of $10,000 as the result of a sponsorship deal between the club and Stallion Station. The Australian and NZ breeding enterprise put up $10,000 worth of service fees to any horse that could break the existing State and track record of Dont Tell Porkies of 1:53.4. Patrons had to wait until the final event, the WA Botra Country Cup, to sample a piece of history. Has The Answers, with champion driver Chris Lewis in the bike, worked to the front in the first lap and thereafter proceeded to blitz his eight rivals, returning a mile rate of 1:53.3 for the 1670 metres – 0.1 inside the old mark. The $19,250 Stallion Station 2YO Classic was another highlight of the inaugural Super 9’s meeting at Pinjarra. It fell to the Jessee Moore-trained Kade Howson-driven Art Major colt All The Way Emkay. “This is a fantastic day and we are pleased to support the Pinjarra club and the breeding industry in Western Australia,” Les Joslin, Station Station sales and marketing manager, said. “We are delighted for both the connections of the winner of our sponsored race and the connections of the new record holder.” |
