Mattjesty Makes Mark in OntarioThe brilliant Matt’s Scooter horse Royal Mattjesty was one of the success stories of this year’s rich Ontario Sires Stakes program. He ranked seventh on the overall sire’s list with progeny earnings of $404,440 and was among the top bracket of sires in the two-year-old colts and fillies and three-year-old colts and fillies divisions. One of his daughters, Bay Girl, bankrolled $71,400, courtesy of second placings in the OSS Gold elimination and final. For the term she earned a healthy $230,106 and took a record of 1:50. Recent winners by Royal Mattjesty in Canada have been Full Circle Patty 1:54, Intrigued Royally 1:54.8 and Ella V Horse 1:57.8. In Australia, Royal Mattjesty produced the impressive Byford (WA) trial winner last Sunday in Hermattjesty Mulan, a two-year-old filly out of a Falcon Seelster mare from the family of Changeover, Chokin and co. Rascal Steps Up To Cup ClassTalented four-year-old Russley Rascal completed the transition from age group racing to open class ranks and became Mach Three’s second winner of the Franklin Cup when he prevailed in the $52,000 Group 2 3200 metre feature at Alexandra Park last Friday (November 26). Having only his second start since a spell, the tough gelding began tardily from the standing start and settled down sixth in the elite nine-horse field. At the 1400m mark Mark Purdon eased his charge three-wide to work up to sit parked outside the pacemaking Percy The Punter before gaining cover from stablemate Highview Tommy with a round to go. On the home turn Russley Rascal’s winning hopes looked forlorn when Highview Tommy eked out a two length advantage, but, knuckling down to the task in resolute fashion, Russley Rascal gradually overhauled the leaders to get up in the last stride. He stopped the clock at 4:03.1 (mile rate 2:02.2) with the final 800m and 400m splits of a slashing 55.3 and 26.6 seconds. Russley Rascal joins champion Auckland Reactor (2008) as Mach Three sired winners of the Franklin Cup. Part-owner Neville Pilcher said: "I've owned some pretty nice horses over the years but this fella is the pick of them. He was a really nice three-year-old and now he's doing the business at four. "He seems to get better with every run. Those Mach Three’s are producing some good ones alright.” As a three-year-old Russley Rascal won nine of his 14 starts including the $500,000 Group 1 Great Northern Derby and was placed in the NZ Derby and Harness Jewels. His career record stands at 16 starts for 11 wins, four placings and $447,285 in stakes. Russley Rascal will now be aimed at the big races over the Christmas Carnival at Auckland. The Inter Dominions at Addington and the big four-year-old Group 1’s, the $100,000 Taylor Mile, $125,000 Messenger and $200,000 Harness Jewels are also on his agenda. Bred by Tony Parker, who also bred Auckland Reactor, Russley Rascal is the second foal of Russley Fiction, an unraced Road Machine mare out of the seven-win Soky’s Atom mare Russley Fancy. |
Armbro Invasion on TopA feature of this season’s New Zealand trotting sire’s list is the strong performance of our stallion Armbro Invasion. He is once again ranked second in every category -- winners, races won and stakes – behind only the mighty Sundon. This season Armbro Invasion has sired 25 individual winners and they have won 28 races and $236,556 through the end of November. More Metro WinnersOur sires produced winners at the major metropolitan tracks in four different States last weekend. Heading the list was Mach Twain (by Mach Three), who won a support race on Miracle Mile night at Menangle in a new lifetime mark of 1:55.7. Courage Under Fire was represented by emerging talent Glenferrie Alexis, who posted win No. 12 at Tabcorp Park Melton, and the 1:58.4 Albion Park winner No Swaps, while Mach Three also sired the Gloucester Park winner Xupan Three (his 11th win). Righteous Hanover’s NZ winnerSamarias Bromac, a member of the first NZ crop of the royally bred Righteous Hanover, totted up her third lifetime win when she emerged successful on the grass at Motukarara last Sunday (November 28). She rated 2:02.3 for the 2000 metres – a tidy effort in the going – with the final 800m in 58.6 seconds. Pedigree Profile: Kotare MachKotare Mach, who won in Free-for-all company at Addington recently and is unbeaten in three outings this season, is rated one of New Zealand’s leading contenders for the Inter Dominions at Addington next March/April.
The winner of 12 of his 25 starts and $212,957 in stakes, Kotare Mach was a classic winner at 2 and 3. He won the Group 1 $100,000 Welcome Stakes in 1:56.5 as a two-year-old and the Group 2 $40,000 3YO Flying Stakes, both at Addington. He holds a record of 1:53 at 3. Bred by Kotare Downs Stud principal Tony Abell, who also race him, Kotare Mach is a four-year-old entire son of the Matt’s Scooter horse Mach Three and one of his third NZ crop. Extra B G, the dam of Kotare Mach, is a Butler B G mare from Tanisa Vance, by Vance Hanover from the Smooth Fella mare Tanisa, and tracing to the noted foundation mare Rita Bell. This is the family of top horses such as Fake Denario 1:48.2, Delightful Lady, Smooth Dave, Buck The Odds, Slugger, Tobias, Josias, Mathias and others. Unraced, Extra B G left six foals of racing age and four winners in Kotare Mach, Kotare Jago (3 wins), Kotare Yalta (2 wins) and Kotare Yoyo. The grand-dam, Tanisa Vance, also threw four winners headed up by Ross The Boss, who won 10 in NZ and later took a mark of 1:50 in America, Habeebee 1:54.8 (USA) and the NZ Methven Cup winner Kotare Jaeger 1:56.9. Kotare Mach boasts a preponderance of Meadow Skipper blood – on both sides of his family tree. The ‘Great One’ appears twice on the top side and three times on the distaff side via Albatross (twice) and Smooth Fella. |
