Dual Group success for Mach Three

Stallion Station’s flagship sire Mach Three produced the winners of two Group races over the Anzac Day weekend.

His three-year-old daughter Charlotte Brew accounted for the best fillies in the country in the $100,000 Group 1 Victoria Oaks at Tabcorp Park, Melton, while Babyitsu outstayed Tasmania’s leading four-year-olds in the $30,000 Group 3 Raider Stakes at Devonport.

Charlotte Brew, one of the least experienced runners in the field, took full advantage of a perfect barrier draw and a clever drive from Greg Sugars to claim the $67,500 winner’s cheque.

After a fast getaway, Charlotte Brew assumed the pacemaking role before Sugars wisely elected to hand up to the favourite Rocknrolla 500 metres after the start. Charlotte Brew then enjoyed a saloon passage behind the leader for the remainder of the trip.

Switched down into the passing lane, Charlotte Brew sprinted brilliantly when called upon by Sugars, swamping Rocknrolla in the closing stages to win by 2.6 metres.

The mile rate of 1:59 for the 2240 metres was a new lifetime mark.

The win pushed Charlotte Brew’s earnings to $103,500, the result of five wins and six placings from 15 starts.

Bred in New Zealand by Mike Stratford, Charlotte Brew is the fifth foal and the fourth winner of the Caprock mare Carnasserie, the dam of others including Strathcarn 1:53.6 (USA) and Braithwaite 1:58.2.

Lightly raced, Carnasserie is a grand-daughter of a top NZ racemare in Classiebawn 2:00.3 (by Scottish Hanover), who left nine winners and is also the grand-dam of My Glengower, a classic-winning two and three-year-old and later a successful sire.

Stroma, a former Australian 2YO of the Year, is a member of the immediate family.

Babyitsu, a four-year-old gelding, completed a clean sweep of the Raider Stakes, a leg of the Tasmanian Sires Stakes.

Starting from the second row, Babyitsu was sent forward three-wide in the early stages by Gareth Rattray to race upsides with the pacemaking Make A Memory (by Mach Three), a finalist in the two and three-year-old legs of the series.

Gaining the upper hand in the home straight, Babyitsu drew clear to win by three metres, with Make A Memory third, 3.5 metres from the winner.

The winner of 10 of 14 starts this season, Babyitsu clocked 57.1 seconds for the last 800 metres – unbelievable times on the tight Devonport circuit!

He boasts $121,317 in lifetime earnings.

Out of the Golden Greek mare Breeze Baby, a Tasmanian Oaks placegetter, Babyitsu is a first foal.  He belongs to a top Tasmanian family which includes the Inter Dominion champion Thorate, and others including Stormrate, Adorate, Nubeena, Goldeena and Beena Karalta.

In North America, Jeremy’s Successor (by Mach Three) hoisted the fastest time of the year at Yonkers’ half-mile track, winning a $50,000 leg of the George Morton Levy Memorial Series in 1:52.2.

Other notable winners left by Mach Three during the past fortnight include Mach Dreamy, who won a heat of the QBred Triad 3YO at Gold Coast, Bronzwhaler Whitby, a 1:59 winner at Gloucester Park, BG Three (Menangle), Noelhamric 1:59.7 (Albion Park) and the dual Victorian provincial winner Mach Twain.

Pacific Fella on fire

The Pacific Fella juggernaut continues to roll on….

The highlight of another excellent month for the world champion son of Cam Fella was a quinella in the $20,000 Ian Daff Memorial for open-class mares at Tabcorp Park, Melton in Pacific Charm and Wya Mya Macray. Pacific Charm, who posted win No. 16, increased her stake earnings to over $210,000, making her Pacific Fella’s second richest female in Australia behind Ruby Dazzler ($333,102).

Ima Spicey Lombo, who won a Vicbred heat at Geelong in 1:58, the end-to-e3nd Westbury (Tas.) Cup winner Grand Brook and Ruby Dazzler 1:59.8 (Gloucester Park) have been other recent winners by Pacific Fella.

Pacific Fella has left 84 individual winners and progeny earnings of $1,033,615 in Australia to date this season; his third consecutive million dollar season.

Franco Jamar is supreme

Star three-year-old Franco Jamar provided the highlight for Courage Under Fire during the past fortnight in winning the $49,000 Group 2 Southern Supremacy Stakes Final at Invercargill.

Beautifully handled by Craig Thornley, the colt settled three deep on the rails before moving one out with 1200 metres to go. Switched three wide on the home turn, Franco Jamar sprinted brilliantly to relegate the NZ Derby winner Captain Peacock and Kotare Mach (by Mach Three) into the minor placings.

It was his eighth win from 16 starts and boosted his stakes tally to $114,382.

On the same card the ‘Courage’ youngster Jellignite broke maiden ranks at only his third start.

Smart three-year-old filly Maggie Kennedy notched her fourth feature race win in the Killarney Stud Bouquet at Hobart.

Jumping straight to the front, the filly never gave her supporters any cause for concern and ran out a comfortable eight metre winner. As a two-year-old she won the Tasmanian Sweepstakes Final and Blue Bonnet, while at 3 she also lifted the Princess of Pace.

Another ‘Courage’ three-year-old, Courage To Rule, went within a length of completing a Derby double when he led and finished a brave second in the $100,000 NSW Derby, an event his sire won eleven years earlier.

Brave Wiggy, a New Zealand bred four-year-old, became ‘Courage’s’ fastest progeny in Australia when he went in a blazing 1:54.7 at Menangle when having his first start for the Lisa Fitzpatrick stable.

Over in the West, the two-year-old Brush With Courage won the fastest of the WA Sales Classic qualifiers at Gloucester Park, while the three-year-old Arctic Fire is three-for-three in Australia – all inside 2:00.

Courage Under Fire is enjoying his best season on record; he is second on the NZ All Aged list and second on the 3YO lists in both NZ (to Mach Three) and Australia.

Riverboat Rosie in 1:57.2

Riverboat Rosie and Rohan Home¸ a pair of Riverboat King progeny, were in sparkling form in April.

Riverboat Rosie earned a new speed badge of 1:57.2 with her runaway Globe Derby Park success, while Rohan Home, a former Australasian three-year-old record holder, went in a sizzling 1:55.9 at Menangle’s big Group 1 meeting.

Royal Mattjesty filly in 1:58.1

Mattjestic Falcon, a Royal Mattjesty three-year-old filly, ended a run of minor placings when she posted her first win at Menangle Park in 1:58.1.

After racing behind the leader, the filly was blocked for racing room until the final stages, but finished with a wet sail once clear to score by two metres.

Meanwhile, in Canada, the three-year-old High Net Worth is carrying the flag for his sire with successive wins in 1:54.6 and 1:54.8 recently.

Invasion winners

Trotting sire Armbro Invasion left two ‘new’ winners in the space of four days. They were the two-year-old filly Madisonz Luck, who won on debut at Alexandra Park, and the Albion Park winner Natural Dash.

Gee Invasion, one of WA’s leading trotters, overcame a 40 metre handicap to notch his seventh win for the term and his ninth lifetime at Gloucester Park on April 17.
